Do Outdoor Cushions Need Ties, and Where Should They Go?

Put ties on a cushion when the frame has a rail, a slat, or a leg you can loop them around. Skip them on a built-in window seat or banquette, where the walls already hold the pad. Pick the layout once, from what your furniture actually has to tie to.

Why some pads slide more than others

An Adirondack seat falls away from you, so the pad creeps forward. Raise a chaise back and gravity walks the pad toward your feet. A porch swing tugs the pad on every pass. Metal and plastic dining seats are simply slick.

Fit still comes first. Measure the frame, not the old cushion. Compressed foam reads short, and a pad cut to that number slides on the wood. That rule is in the measuring guide.

The five layouts on the custom form

On the custom form, ties are their own step. Pick the pattern that matches where the frame has rails.

  • No ties. Window seats, banquettes, and any pad that already sits inside walls or arm rails.
  • 2 at back corners. Dining chairs and wicker seats with back posts or a back rail.
  • 4 at all corners. Armless chairs, open frames, and windy decks, where the front corners can lift.
  • 2 at sides. Sling chairs and metal frames that only give you a side rail.
  • 4 front and back. Porch swings, gliders, and long pads on a frame that moves.

Adirondack: a hinged pad, not a flat seat

A flat dining pad on an Adirondack is the wrong shape. The chair has a deep slope and a connected seat and back. You need one piece that bends at the hinge.

Our Adirondack Chair Cushion is a hinged 21 by 40 inch pad with a boxed edge and fabric ties sewn in. Measure width across the seat, seat depth to the hinge, and back height from the hinge up. Tie the back to the rear posts or slats. If a steep seat still creeps, use four ties and loop the front pair through a slat, not around the arm.

Chaise: hold it at the hinge

The Chaise Lounge Cushion is a single-break pad, boxed edge, with fabric ties sewn in. The listed size is 22 by 72 by 2 inches, which is what most poolside frames take. Measure the frame flat: width, total length, and the back section down to the hinge. When the back is up, use 4 front and back, or 2 at the sides near the break, and loop them through a slat at the hinge.

Porch swing: four ties, front and back

Two back ties hold a dining pad. They do not hold a swing pad. The seat moves, and the front walks off the slats.

The Porch Swing Cushion is 52 by 16 by 2 inches with four fabric ties sewn front and back. Tie them to the front rail and the back rail, not to the chains. Chains chew fabric. Width and thickness are covered in the swing size post.

Dining and wicker seat pads

Two ties at the back corners are enough on most dining chairs. Loop them around the back posts or the back rail. That is how the Dining Chair Seat Pad is built: a square-corner pad for a slatted timber chair, with fabric ties sewn in.

Go to four corners if the chair is armless, the seat is slick, or the set lives in the wind.

The Wicker Chair Seat Pad has a boxed edge and rounded back corners so it sits inside a woven frame. Use back ties if the weave leaves a post or a rail you can loop. If the back is a solid panel, skip the ties and cut the pad to fill the seat so it cannot wander.

When ties will not help

Ties need an anchor. A solid wicker back with no gap, a smooth plastic chair with no rails, and some one-piece sling frames give you nothing to loop. Sewing ties onto those pads just leaves two flaps hanging.

We do not add Velcro or a rubberized bottom. If there is nothing to tie to, the pad has to stay put by fit: full width and full depth, measured on the frame. Photograph the chair with a tape on it and send it through the contact form before you order.

Window seats and banquettes: no ties

The Window Seat Cushion is 44 by 16 by 2 inches, boxed edge, with no ties, for a built-in window seat or nook. The walls do the holding. Ties on a pad that already sits in a box snag on the wood and do no work.

Same rule for a built-in bench with a back and two ends. Choose no ties on the custom form and give us the finished width, depth, and thickness. Other lengths are in Bench Cushions.
